Field Sobriety Tests and Training Experience
William Maze is certified in the NHTSA/IACP standardized field sobriety tests. This three day course is intended to teach police officers about driving behaviors associated with impaired driving, impaired driver's reactions and divided attention task abilities, signs of consumption, preliminary field sobriety screens, and a three test battery of standardized field sobriety tests. Knowing these materials better than trained police officers and even police instructors gives Mr. Maze a significant advantage over officers during contested evidentiary hearings and cross-examination during trial.

Mr. Maze has successfully argued in favor of suppressing certain field sobriety tests when those tests were administered improperly. In cases where these tests provided the only basis for probable cause, the arrests have been held unlawful and the subsequent breath or blood test results were inadmissible. In other cases, these tests have been struck from the jury's consideration.

In connection with the Michigan DUI Lawyers' Association (MDLA), Mr. Maze recently helped train a group of Michigan and out-of-state attorneys in the NHTSA/IACP standardized field sobriety testing course.
